When a piano is new, the strings are still stretching. Typically, a piano needs to be tuned 3-4 times in its first year to accommodate the stretch. After a piano has stabilized, it typically needs to be tuned at least once per year. If a piano is particularly out of tune, it may need to be tuned an additional time to have it be stable. Typically, if a piano has not been tuned for several years, it will need a pitch raise in addition to a regular tuning in order to be stable. Both tunings are done on the same visit and take approximately 2 1/2 hours.
